Pageant girls are typically the epitome of perfection: gorgeous, well-spoken, talented humanitarians, who help the world and look amazing doing it. Almost too good to be true, right? For Kim MacKenzie, Miss Norway in Infinity Media’s Queen of the Universe Pageant, it was. Yet, it was through the sparkle and glamour of pageants that Kim discovered being authentic is far better than being perfect.

“I’ve battled being a perfectionist my entire life. It’s in part what triggered my battle with bulimia when I was twelve,” Kim admits, “But, staying silent is what causes an eating disorder to thrive. Our silence feeds it. That’s why I’m walking in the National Eating Disorder Association’s San Diego Walk: to show that it’s okay to openly talk about it. We have to, if we’re going to beat it.”

Kim attests that her competing in the Miss CA USA Pageant in 2010 was the culmination of her battle with bulimia. “It was a long, hard, ten-year journey to find enough confidence to walk in a bikini in front of millions of people,” Kim asserts with a chuckle, “But, after I did it, I knew I faced my demon…and I kicked it’s you-know-what! That’s why I love pageants! Because of pageants, I was able to find both my confidence and my voice. It’s time for all women struggling with body image issues to to turn and face the demons that whisper ‘we are not worthy of enjoying life because of the size of our jeans.’”

Now, four-years free of her eating disorder, Kim declares, “I love my body now! I’m happy, fit, and healthy. I’m not going to starve myself to fit into somebody else’s mold. I hope, one day, all women can say the same.”

The second annual San Diego, CA National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) Walk will take place on February 22, 2014 in Mission Bay, San Diego.
