How to eat healthily when this is what college is like?

Question by dellkitten: How to eat healthily when this is what college is like?
Before going to college, I set out on a healthy eating regime. I can’t exercise a lot, but I knew I’d be walking lots at college (I come in 30 miles every day with train and bus), plus I leave at 7am and often don’t get back before 6/7pm, then have college work and dinner before bed. Add a history of joint problems in my family leading to frequent injury, and you have the reasons why I can’t exercise.

I thought, “my college is in Oxford, there’ll be SO many healthy eateries, it’ll be great!” The college canteen does chips, pies and white pasta with sugary sauces, the cafe does paninis, all with cheese and white bread, and muffins, and all in feasible walking distance in my hour-long lunch is KFC and Mcdonald’s. And packed lunches are impractical, because of the time taken to prep them and the fact that I can’t stand my own cooked food, unless it’s high fat or hot. That means, as far as I can see, no healthy options!

I’m quite large, so I need to have a lot of carbs and proteins to fill me up. I’m confident that I could ween myself of the fizzy drinks and the sweets, little by little, if I could eat healthy with it. The worst is that my family used to be fairly healthy, but now it’s ALL unhealthy, hardly any vegetables, all high fat. My whole family are overweight or obese because of it, and I want to buck this trend.

I like vegetables, I love chicken, turkey, stir fries, chinese food (the low fat options) and all those healthy options, but there are no healthy options. The nail in the coffin is money; lean meats cost more, and so does buying extra foods for me, and my dad refuses to pay. How am I going to shed these pounds with this schedule?

NO CRASH DIETS, FASTING, OR POPULAR FUNNY-NAME ONES! I want to be healthy when I’m skinny, not gain it all back!

Buying extra foods might work for you! Yes! Buy vegetables and fruits from the market. Then, wash ’em and eat clean…

Good luck!
