How to eat healthy on a tight budget?

Question by Josh Owens: How to eat healthy on a tight budget?
Lets face it, eating healthy is expensive and instead you could go get some dollar burgers instead for way less than buying some fruits. And i hate it. I swim year around and i need to eat healthy. I do actually eat healthier than most people, i stay away from fast foods and eat a good breakfast and make sure to stay away from sugary things as much as i can. But are there any tips for eating healthy on a tight budget?

I usually buy the fruits and vegetables that are the cheapest at the moment. Dry beans are cheaper than canned beans. Brown rice is not that expensive.

Actually that is a myth. It is cheaper to eat healthy- if you shop around, avoid pricey “health” foods, and know how to cook. It helps if you have an Aldi nearby or another discount grocery store that has a good selection of produce. Most junk food is overprocessed and processed foods are expensive because of the labor to produce them. You can buy healthy food cheap by sticking to raw ingredients and knowing how to cook/prepare food. Dry beans, brown rice, rolled oats, whole grain flour, and many vegetables are inexpensive. If you eat animal products, milk, cheese, eggs, and chicken can fit into a budget.
Where I shop, a bag of cookies or chips is the same price or more expensive than a dozen eggs, bag of frozen vegetables or salad mix. It goes without saying that fast food meals are way more expensive than buying these products and preparing them yourself (even when shopping off the dollar menu). And that doesn’t even count the long term cost on your health. For about $ 5, I can buy ingredients for a weeks worth of salads which I have every day for lunch. I make my own whole grain bread and make soup often, at least in the winter. I stay away from most fruits- vegetables are healthier. An orange or banana once in a while is a healthy snack but I wouldn’t overdo the fruit. And nutritionists now recommend staying away from juices- they are high in sugar and many don’t really have any nutritional value (although I doubt you need to watch calories given your activity level).
