Glycemic Index – Does It Really Matter?

Do we really need to keep stressing over the GI in everyday life? NOOOOO! People tend to forget this was created back in the 1980’s as a tool for diabetics and unfortunately found it’s way into the real world messing up the mind of healthy individuals and convincing them it is the worst thing in the world to focus on the glycemic index of foods. Glycemic Index = measures the effects of carbs and their ability to raise blood sugar levels Keywords Fasted Isolation Postprandial State Glycemic Load Insulin Response Satiety Index Stop concerning yourself with this Insulin “spike” It refers to the idea of a dramatic increase in blood sugar and insulin but in healthy individuals this “spike” is irrelevant because the body is very efficient at keeping blood sugar levels in a heathy range. www.bodyrecomposition.com www.livestrong.com www.alanaragon.com

There is a “spike” no matter what macronutrient you eat. Protein is Insulinogenic so if you had a shake alone there would be a change in blood sugar but these minute changes are not important to think about in healthy individuals. You start off by saying try telling that to a person over 50 with destroyed insulin. If you watched and listened to the video you would understand how the GI was started and I state in healthy individuals it is not worth thinking about. Rethink before commenting.

Try to tell that GI doesnt matter to an obese person or a person over 50 yr with destroyed insulin response over lifetime of eatin high GI and GL food. You’re lean because Ur body is geneticaly designed to treat carbs as energy and not as something to store as fat. But there are ppl who can starve to death and still they’re body will be converting carbs into fat until they die. I’ve just read “wheat belly” and “why we get fat” by Taubes and I came to conclusion that carbs suck altogether.

You have a nice way of presenting things, wish I could talk like that to others…
But is it me or You just say that “carbs combined with proteins spike insuline response much more than just carbs alone” and then in the end of this video You said that “GI doesn’t matter because if you mix carbs with protein or fat there won’t be spike in the insuline because of the delay in digestion”
So which is it? there is a spike or there isn’t when You combine carbs with proteins?

I was sceptical about taking advice from someone who’s been working out a few years less than myself, but that scepticism appears to be pointless. In some things, Knowledge > Experience. Good video mate, keep it up.

It’s great that you’re doing these videos, hopefully leading to other articles on how the body uses different energy systems throughout the day. i.e. ‘Joe’ sitting at his desk for 8 hours might be better off burning off/creating ketones than the athelete who might need a steady supply of carbs. Then the occasional athelete who needs even more flexibility through energy systems.

  21. mattyfusaro says:

    hahah enough said!

I like your thorough breakdowns of these topics. I’m sure many of your viewers won’t be able to comprehend what you are saying the first time around. Definitely the most informative of any of the fitness channels I am subscribed to.
