Could iPads Be the Answer to Curbing Drug Abuse?

A November 25 article from the Cincinnati Business Courier includes a fascinating study from a local university, which is investigating whether or not the humble iPad could be used to prevent prescription drug abuse – an ongoing problem across the US.

Academics at the University of Cincinnati are examining whether tablets that have facial recognition tools installed could help doctors to determine whether or not patients are taking prescribed medications as instructed. This ensures that they aren’t using them for recreational reasons which could affect their recovery.

The software could also reveal when a patient is not taking a drug that’s designed to help addicts gradually wean themselves off an addictive substance. During the trial, Suboxone has been used, which is a drug commonly used to help opiate addicts overcome their dependency. However, a black market has emerged for these drugs, and many people decide to sell on their dosage to others.

It’s hoped that this iPad tool could help addicts to successfully complete their rehabilitation without cutting corners – as if they are using the drug incorrectly, it puts them at a greater risk of entering into a relapse.

A spokesperson said: “Fatal overdoses from prescription opiates have quadrupled in the last 15 years. Overall, the economic cost of opioid abuse is estimated to exceed $ 55 billion annually.”

It’s thought that the tool will also have greater uses for ensuring that patients suffering from other diseases are on the road to recovery. A researcher added: “It could also be used in the future for monitoring medication adherence in patients being treated for infectious diseases such as TB and AIDS. Such untreated patients represent a dangerous reservoir for infecting nearby healthy individuals.” The app could be rolled out if the results are seen to be promising, and doctors will also be able to use the tool on their iPhones.
