Music traditions run deep in Southwest Louisiana. For generations, folks here have immersed themselves in the melodies, dance steps and lyrics of Cajun, Swamp Pop, Zydeco and other music genres that express the essential necessities of everyday life: family, relationships, food and fun.

Throughout Southwest Louisiana, there are many ways to enjoy the local sounds. Being the Festival Capital of Louisiana, there are several events and festivals where you can relax or kick up your heels to some of the best live local and regional bands.

As the sun goes down, things really heat up in Downtown Lake Charles for the annual Downtown at Sundown concert series. For four consecutive Fridays beginning May 15 from 6- 9 p.m., Downtown at Sundown will showcase live music by regional bands. This year’s line-up includes recent Grammy award winner and Cajun/Country music singer-songwriter Jo-El Sonnier on May 22.

The dance party continues into the summer months as two music festivals take Lake Charles by storm!

The Cajun French Music & Food Festival, July 17-18, is the place to cut a rug and get your fill of Cajun culinary treats. Every year the festival aims to preserve the Cajun traditions and heritage through music, dancing and of course – FOOD! They’ll have plenty of local musicians who will get you dancing in no time! And with all gumbo, jambalaya, cracklins and étoufée, you’ll want to work it off by entering one of the waltz or two step dance contests.

Later that month, the small town of Hackberry comes out of the marshes and heads to the Lake Charles Civic Center to celebrate the landscape that makes Southwest Louisiana unique. The Marshland Festival will be held July 24-25 and it’s a great way to experience authentic Louisiana culture, Cajun food and music. From Zydeco, Oldies, Cajun and Country there is always a tune to get the crowd on their feet dancing and celebrating.

Check out some of music’s biggest stars and cool off by the pool this summer at one of our area casinos. Kicking off the last Thursday in May at L’Auberge Casino Resort, the Liquid Society Party by the Pool concert series is the hottest party in town featuring headliner performances. The Golden Nugget Lake Charles is cranking up concerts with popular artists from today’s generation, classic rock, and tributes to cultural heritages. A short drive down the road, Isle of Capri Casino Hotel and Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel are turning it up a notch with superstar concerts we bet you won’t want to miss!
