Problem Drinkers Aren’t Automatically Alcoholics, Claims CDC

USA (PRWEB) December 05, 2014

Binge drinking has long been cited as a concern among healthcare professionals. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, someone who consumes alarming amounts of alcohol in one sitting may not necessarily be an alcoholic. These claims were cited in an Inquisitr article on November 22.

This contravenes the previous school of thought that those who drink excessive amounts of alcohol are addicts. However, its researchers have argued that there have been few studies to back these claims up. Although 33% of the 138,000 people analyzed by the CDC could be defined as an excessive drinker based on their lifestyle and habits, only 10% of this group can actually be defined as someone who is chemically dependent on alcohol. It’s believed that this low number of alcoholics can be attributed to the high taxes which are levied on many beverages in grocery stores and bars.

The CDC continues to insist that people who are alcoholics need plenty of professional help and support in the form of rehabilitation to help them to return to health. It has also suggested a range of measures to enable people who drink excessively to cut back their alcohol intake.

A spokesperson for the study told the Medical News Today journal: “It also emphasizes the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to reducing excessive drinking that includes evidence-based community strategies, screening and counseling in healthcare settings, and high-quality substance abuse treatment for those who need it.”

The sample size of 138,000 people was compiled from national surveys of Americans which took place over three years. The figures were taken with a pinch of salt, as many polls where people gauge their own alcohol consumption can be deemed as exceptionally unreliable.
