New book: Preventing Parkinson’s Disease by Understanding the Causes

Preventing Parkinson’s: How to Cut Your Risk by Strengthening Your Multiple Shields. This groundbreaking work is the first of its kind in the field of Parkinson’s Disease.

Staten Island, New York (PRWEB) May 20, 2015

Over the next 25 years, the prevalence of Parkinson’s Disease is predicted to at least double due to the aging of baby-boomers. But treatments for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s are only symptomatic and the disease remains incurable. The prevention of Parkinson’s has gained very little attention. Up until now there has been no single resource available for people to learn what causes Parkinson’s Disease and how to stay healthy. Fortunately, a new book, Preventing Parkinson’s: How to Cut Your Risk by Strengthening Your Multiple Shields™ solves these problems. It is the first book of its kind in the field of Parkinson’s.

Dr. Ben Weinstock, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, took the causes of Parkinson’s Disease—”the multiple hits”– and worked backwards. This reverse engineering approach led him to the idea that people can lower their risk of Parkinson’s. Research strongly suggests that the combination of healthy habits—what Weinstock calls “multiple shields”— can inhibit the formation of alpha-synuclein, the abnormal protein implicated in Parkinson’s.

About 20% of Parkinson’s patients have a close relative with the disease. However, the vast majority of people diagnosed with the disease have no family history of the condition, pointing to influences from lifestyle and the environment. Proactive lifestyle modifications therefore represent another weapon in the war on Parkinson’s: in addition to current research to find a cure for those suffering from the disease, it may be possible to avoid the predicted tidal wave of the condition over the next 25 years by recognizing what causes Parkinson’s Disease.

Parkinson’s Disease is the second most common neurodegenerative condition after Alzheimer’s. There are at least one million people suffering with Parkinson’s Disease in America, with as many as seven to ten million people worldwide. The economic burden of Parkinson’s Disease is estimated at 25 billion dollars per year just in the United States alone.

The foreword of the book is written by Judith Potashkin, PhD, a leading Parkinson’s researcher. According to Potashkin, “This source will help those who choose to follow on a path of optimal health. Dr. Weinstock thoroughly evaluates how the synergy of diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, avoidance of toxins, prevention of head injuries, and proper medical care can reduce one’s chance of developing Parkinson’s Disease. There are over 1,000 citations from current medical literature and ‘Action Plans’ are provided at the end of each chapter. These summarize the steps one can take immediately to reduce one’s risk of developing Parkinson’s Disease.”
