NAPW Members Said No to Bullying and Yes to Solidarity at Local Chapter Networking Events Across the US as They Raised Awareness for ‘Don’t Be a Bully’ Month this August

Whether it takes place in the office or in the schoolroom, NAPW Local Chapter members said a resounding no to bullying as they stood together in unity this August during ‘Don’t Be A Bully’ Month. All across the United States, Local Chapters held thought-provoking networking events focusing on finding solutions to the bullying and intimidation many women face in the workplace and many young girls encounter every day at school and in cyberspace.

“I am so pleased and proud of the amazingly creative and unique ‘Don’t Be a Bully’ Month networking events initiated by our Local Chapters,” says Star Jones, NAPW President and National Spokesperson. “By taking the unacceptable behavior of bullying center stage, and by teaching future generations to avoid becoming adult bullies, we prove, once again, that when women support, encourage and work together to affect positive social change, the impact of our actions resonates across the land.”

From California to New York, down south and up north, NAPW members and their guests proudly stood together in unity against bullying. Knowing the importance of leading by example, a number of Local Chapters teamed up with NAPW Foundation partner Girls Inc., and hosted anti-bullying events for young girls; some hosted guest speakers who spoke passionately about what professional women can do to discourage bullying and others raised awareness by candidly discussing their own experiences with bullying.

Local Chapters in NAPW’s Eastern Region did their part when it comes to raising awareness for ‘Don’t Be a Bully Month.’ Members and guests from the NYC Chapter gathered for a picnic in Madison Square Park with girls from Girls Inc. All wore orange in a show of solidarity against bullying.

“We broke into intimate circles where we shared our own stories of bullying, what we’ve done and what we’ve learned from these unfortunate situations,” said NYC Chapter Vice President Janine Schindler.

The Newport News, VA Local Chapter also partnered with Girls Inc. for an Anti-Bully Luncheon. Forest Hills, NY members and guests heard from Human Rights Activist Angelica Harris, who talked about the importance of educating women and children about these serious issues.

At Chapter networking events in Philadelphia and Scranton, PA; Bowie, MD; Greensboro and South Charlotte, NC; Loudoun County, VA; Manchester, NH; Warwick, RI and West Orange, NJ, law enforcement personnel and business coaches gave professional women tips on everything from how to confront bullies to how to dress, and ultimately, feel, more confident in the office.

In NAPW’s Central Region, members and guests in Wichita, KS also heard from experts about workplace bullying and the impact of dressing professionally; The Woodlands, TX hosted a volunteer from Dress For Success, another NAPW Foundation partner, who spoke about how the nonprofit helps disadvantaged women feel more confident when dressing for the workplace. Members and guests in Central Houston, TX met at The Women’s Hospital of Texas for an informative networking workshop on healthy eating.

Cyber bullying and workplace bullying were the topics of discussions at Chicago and Orland Park, IL, Local Chapters in NAPW’s Northern region. Members and guests walked away with information and practical tips for recognizing and dealing with all types of bullies.

Professional women attending networking events in NAPW’s Southern Region received some eye-opening facts about how bullying affects women and young girls. In St. Petersburg, FL, the Local Chapter teamed up with Girls Inc. for a bullying presentation, “We’re Not in School Anymore: Bullying in the Workplace.” Members and guests in Pembroke Pines and Palm Beach, FL attended networking events focusing on bullying.

In Baton Rouge, LA, members and guests gathered at a local battered women’s shelter where they performed beauty makeovers and skin care consultations to help enhance the self-esteem of women who are victims of another type of bullying: domestic violence.

“Shelter residents looked amazing and were provided with gift bags at the conclusion of the event. It was a rewarding experience for the residents and NAPW Baton Rouge, LA Local Chapter members,” said President Trina Armstrong.

Local Chapters in NAPW’s Western Region also provided opportunities for members and guests to learn more about what they could do to prevent bullying. The Los Angeles, CA Local Chapter hosted Melissa Sherman, Executive Director of Beyond Bullies, who is passionate about helping teens and youth who are the targets of bullies. Attendees in San Mateo, CA heard from a representative from the local police department who counsels teens and gives talks about the dangers of bullying. Networking and working together to inspire and empower one another was the main focus at Local Chapter events in Pasadena, Roseville, San Diego and Westlake Village, CA.
