Is a fruit juice just as healthy as eating the fruit itself?

Question by lex_824: Is a fruit juice just as healthy as eating the fruit itself?
If I make my own fruit juice such as orange juice, watermelon juice, berry juice, etc is it just as healthy as eating the specific fruit? Or does some of its nutritional value get lost when I remove the pulp and how much? What’s the difference?

Hey, although fruit juice retains many of the vitamins of fruit, it doesn’t have the same fibre content. Fruit is a fantastic source of fibre, which is lost when turned to juice.

Having fruit juice is still healthier than having no fruit at all, and making your own is great in that you don’t get any of the added sugar or chemicals which producers may add.

    Only if it is very fresh. Otherwise, a lot of nutrition is quickly lost unless it is canned immediately afterwards to eliminate oxidation… and even then some nurtition is lost. Freshly-made juice often gives you MORE nutrition than the whole fruit or veggie, because its broken up finer and you don’t have half-chewed pieces of it, which may not be digested fully. This is especiallly true for very solid foods like carrots.

    Eating the pulp or putting it into soup stock is also a good idea: some of the nutrients remain with the pulp. Putting the pulp through the juicer/processor a second time, with a bit of water, also helps extract as much nutrition as possible. This “second time through” batch will be more diluted and less tasty, so drink it separately – perhaps even first, so the richer, more flavor-filled stuff is the taste you remember afterwards.

    Fruit juice is concentrated calories and without the whole fruit you are missing fiber and micro-nutrients and drinking many more calories than you need.

    It is not as healthy as eating the fruit. There are more fibers and nutrients if you’re going to eat the fruit itself. It is very important to know what are healthy foods to eat.
