    Julie James (California) –

This book is a work of art. In the midst of mediocre books filled with incorrect information, this book is incredibly welcome. Written by one of the most respected names in the herbal world, Healing Herbs is an essential addition to my already very extensive herbal library.
First off, it’s simply gorgeous. Filled with beautiful and detailed photography and line drawings that not only allow for correct identification of the plants, but also illustrate processes and concepts.
She has chosen 20 plants to focus on, and I love this. So often, books try to cram too many herbs into one book, resulting in frustratingly incomplete information. Instead she has chosen some of my very favorite healing plants and provides extensive, detailed and, oh bless her heart, ACCURATE information on everything from wildcrafting or growing, to harvesting and drying, to medicine- and food-making.
The recipes, for splendid foods (you really must try the calendula lemon shortbread and the sage fritta, both of which are in regular rotation in my kitchen now) as well as for a wide variety of healing salves, teas and extracts, are well-formulated and intelligent.
The information is laid out in a lovely format, the writing is delightful, funny and insightful and with a breadth of knowledge that comes from many decades of close relationship with these plants. I’ve been an herbalist for a long time, and have seen the same information regurgitated over and over, but this book has me jotting down notes in the margins, and running to the kitchen and garden and apothecary filled with inspiration. Yes, it’s lovely and accessible for beginners, but even for more advanced herbalists, this book is a gem.

    Just what I needed!, February 6, 2015

Healing Herbs is exactly what I needed for so many reasons. First, in the dead of winter, it is like a little vacation to a secret summer garden. The photography is simple, clean and beautiful. If for no other reason to have this book, use it as a coffee table book to flip through when you have the winter blues. Following the simplicity yet beauty of the photography are the herbs she selected. They are few in number, everywhere to be found in yards and wild places, and can be used in many different ways. Instead of learning many obscure plants, she encourages us to really get to know a handful in a variety of uses. This keeps the first steps into herbal remedies not seem so daunting or intimidating. Lastly, her voice carries throughout the book as she shares personal experiences and her humor. It’s a rather personal approach to what could have been like a text book. After reading it, I was inspired to try to grow my own ginger in a pot indoors. I’m also anxious to try the raw garlic recipes and to line my shelves with all sorts of raw honey concoctions. Love it! I highly recommend it.

A pleasure to learn from this book!, March 15, 2015

This review is from: Healing Herbs: A Beginner’s Guide to Identifying, Foraging, and Using Medicinal Plants / More than 100 Remedies from 20 of the Most Healing Plants (Flexibound)
Tina Sams has a friendly easy to read writing style. The book begins with general instructions for herbal preparations which the author has boiled down to the basics. Next it moves into 20 herbs and there each chapter is filled with interesting details about the herbs and multiple recipes for cooking and medicine. Tina shares her first hand experiences with the herbs but has also reached out to other herbalists to include a recipe from others working with these plants. It is clear the book is written from experience and from the heart. While geared for the beginner I think the intermediate home herbalist would learn from this book as well. The book and the quality of the pages feel good in my hands. The photos are quite beautiful. It is nicely indexed. I did find the lay out of the recipes unattractive. Overall an excellent learning tool for herbs!
